Technology trends of 2011

It has been said that history is the best predictor of future events and if that is in fact the case, then 2012 is going to be an incredibly exciting year in technology.  2011 saw the explosion of innovations in mobile and social technology with tremendous growth in group buying, geolocation applications, and tablet computing.  Millions of new customers flocked to leading companies in these sectors including Groupon, LivingSocial, FourSquare, Apple, Samsung, Amazon, and of course Facebook.

The infographic below highlights eight of the major trends in 2011 and provides a handful of interesting predictions about what we can expect in 2012.  What jumps out from those is the observation by IBM that approximately 90% of all the data in the world was created in the past two years and IDC is forecasting that the amount of data will double every two years.  On 01 July 2011 I wrote that humans will create and store 1.8 zettabytes that year, so its no surprise that companies of all types are scrambling to capitalize on the “big data” trend.
